Kamala Harris has one of the easiest jobs in the world. She gets paid an impressive salary to sit in a cozy office in the White House and do nothing. Think about it – every time she’s been assigned something to do, she cackles and ignores her task. She did it with the southern border and she did it again with voting rights. She also led a vaccine tour to encourage people to get COVID-19 vaccinations, but people were going to either get vaccinated or not even without the VP providing “education” on why they should.
We haven’t seen her really accomplish anything. She’s met with foreign dignitaries, but even those meetings didn’t always go well. And many of the dignitaries were surprised to find that they were meeting with the VP instead of the president himself.
But, you know, when we have a president who doesn’t speak eloquently and has a habit of falling asleep in long meetings, we have to send in the number two on occasion.
Now, though, it seems that Harris is standing up and is ready to do something as VP. She wants to take on medical debt – something that plagues millions of Americans because they have insufficient health insurance – or no health insurance at all.
What’s funny about this is that Obamacare was supposed to take care of this. But, after nearly 12 years, it still hasn’t done what it claimed that it was going to do. So, people are still getting billed for health services that they cannot afford – and they’re going into crippling levels of debt because of it.
Everyone with a pile of medical bills is holding their breath to see if Harris can pull off even half of what she says she’s going to do. We all know that she hasn’t had a great track record so far. But, with her approval rating in the high 20s to low 30s depending on the week, she really has no place to go but up.
If she doesn’t want to go down in history as being the worst VP the U.S. has ever seen, she needs to step up her game. And it seems she wants to do that by taking on medical debt. She already has a plan and everything.
In a recent announcement, Harris explained “No one in our nation should have to go bankrupt just to get the health care they need.” She explained that in addition to the cost of living on the rise, many people are trying to pay off medical bills due to a fall or a burst appendix that happened years ago.
Several officials from different government agencies spoke about medical debt being a problem and how it actually plagues one out of every three Americans. It’s actually the largest source of debt in collections. And, Black and Hispanic families usually have more medical debt than their White counterparts. Further, women and younger people have more of these bills.
Harris went on to say that “Having medical debt because you were sick or injured should not lower your credit score and make it more difficult to secure the help you need to get out of debt. It’s not logical.”
She’s absolutely right, which is what many Americans have been complaining about for years.
The good news is that she’s also ready to discuss what the White House plans to do about it, which includes getting the Department of Health and Human Services involved. They will be evaluating billing practices, the affordability of care, and how medical debt is being accrued.
There’s also the No Surprises Act, which went into effect in January. HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra explains that this bans the majority of unexpected medical charges from out-of-network providers. This way, people can look at the bill and understand all of the charges.
With a variety of steps in place, Harris may have finally figured out how to do her job. We can at least hope that this promise to Americans with medical debt goes better than her promises to improve the issues at the southern border.
