There’s a passage in the Bible that says in the last days people will say what is dark is light and what is light is dark. That seems to be at the center of Russia’s recent playbook.
Israel has shown disgust and anger after Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, claimed that Nazi leader Adolf Hitler “had Jewish blood.”
The foreign minister made this ridiculous comment to justify why his country maintains that Ukraine needs to be liberated from Nazis. This is being said by Russia even though Ukraine’s president is of Jewish descent.
The foreign minister of Israel charged Lavrov for needed clarification and he demanded that Russia issue an apology to Israel.
According to documented history, the Nazis in Germany murdered six million Jews in the Holocaust during World War II.
Sergei Lavrov was being interviewed on an Italian TV program called Zona Bianca this past weekend. This was just a few days after Israel experienced their Holocaust Remembrance Day, a solemn and sad day on the Israeli calendar.
Lavrov was asked how his country can claim that it is fighting this war to “de-Nazify” Ukraine when President Volodymyr Zelensky is himself Jewish, the foreign minister said, “I could be wrong, but Hitler also had Jewish blood. [That Zelensky is Jewish] means absolutely nothing. Wise Jewish people say that the most ardent anti-Semites are usually Jews.”
Obviously, this declaration caused horrific outcries all around the world. Naftali Bennett, the Prime Minister of Israel, said, “Such lies are meant to blame the Jews themselves for the most terrible crimes in history and thus free the oppressors of the Jews from their responsibility. No war today is the Holocaust or is like the Holocaust.”
Yair Lapid, the Israeli foreign minister spoke with anger and called the words from Lavrov “unforgivable.”
Dani Dayan, the head of Israel’s Had Vashem Holocaust memorial, said, “Most of his remarks are absurd, delusional, dangerous and deserving of any condemnation. Lavrov deals with the reversal of the Holocaust: turning the victims into criminals, based on the promotion of a completely unfounded claim that Hitler was of Jewish descent.”
Ned Price, the United States State Department spokesperson, said that these comments from Lavrov were the “lowest form of racism,” and they were “insidious lies.” He also said that Moscow was always proving that they don’t have a floor on how low they will go.
And Ukrainian President Zelensky himself said, “I have no words… No one has heard any denial or any justification from Moscow. All we have from there is silence.”
He went on to say that Russian leadership had either forgotten or never learned the lessons of World War II.
These moronic words will ultimately hurt Russia due to how deeply offensive they are to Jews in Israel and around the world. In the last few months, Israel, which has a significant Russian population, has attempted to be a mediator between Russia and Ukraine. The government in Israel had taken to heat for not being tough enough with President Vladimir Putin. But now, Russia can expect Israel to line up with Ukraine’s allies.
Those who support Russia’s claim point to claims that Hans Frank, Hitler’s lawyer made. He apparently investigated Hitler’s ancestry to find out if the Nazi leader’s paternal grandfather was Jewish. The claim from Frank got some attention from conspiracy theorists but has been treated with skepticism by most historians.
The walls keep closing in on Putin and his band of leaders. There is no justification for the crimes that have been committed and that is clear to the world.
