Even though the Federal government has not yet confirmed the exact numbers for student loan relief, NCAAP President Derrick Johnson is already playing the race card from the bottom of the deck against President Biden. His claims are as outlandish as one would expect given the situation.
In a statement from August 23rd, he claimed “If the rumors are true, we’ve got a problem. And tragically, we’ve experienced this so many times before. The interstate highway system devastated Black communities. Welfare reform tossed poor people of color by the wayside. The senate’s failure to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act failed to save Black lives.”
Continuing, “President Biden’s decision on student debt cannot become the latest example of a policy that has left Black people – especially Black women – behind. This is not how you treat Black voters who turned out in record numbers and provided 90% of their vote to once again save democracy in 2020.”
This kind of mindset is even more dangerous than Biden forgiving student loans. Should Biden or anyone in the Department of Education indulge these kinds of views it has the potential to set back race relations in this country by decades.
Given the estimated forgiveness is set at $10,000 if you make $125,000 a year or less, it is already rather generous. Especially if you weren’t greedy and ONLY took what you needed for class and books (provided you didn’t get them for cheap or free online). This is the biggest wipe of student loan debt in history, and despite Johnson’s thoughts that $50,000 should be the bare minimum, he seems to have little information about the pricing of school.
The claims of this being “not enough” were expanded upon by Wisdom Cole too.
Wisdom Cole serves as the organization’s national youth and college director. Back in April, his statement was foreshadowing how the NAACP will react to anything less than their demands. “President Biden, student loan debt is a racial and economic justice issue that stains the Soul of America. With each and every repayment extension, you make a stronger case for canceling it. At this point, just cancel it. $50,000 is the bare minimum. $10,000 is not enough.”
Despite his thought process that rioting will fix things, or that he can order the President or anyone around, he could not be more wrong. In 2022 there is no room for reparations. While many make the argument about how recently segregation still existed. They claim that all those payments or extra loan forgiveness will rebuild the lives of the people in the black community.
They fail to account for how little that will do besides causing more inflation. We already got a small taste of it with these COVID checks, and it’s only going to get worse should any type of racially motivated steps be taken.
Another bit Johnson and Cole forget is the word “equality.” Should Biden prove he is just as delusional as he seems to be, and he gives extra forgiveness to blacks, where is the percentage cut off? Do you have to prove your ancestors were enslaved? What about the Hispanics, Asians, and nordic people who migrated here to the extreme northern side? Should they get some too? Should Native Americans get extra too?
If you want one, you must offer it to all. This current offer is much more responsible than some of the insane ideas others have had.
