Wondering who newly elected and conservative Speaker of the House Mike Johnson will vote for and endorse? Well, he made that very clear on a Tuesday episode of CNBC’s Squawk Box.
Co-host Joe Kernan noted that “Everybody’s watching this show right now,” insinuating that if Johnson had “news” to share of an endorsement, it was the time to do it.
Johnson obliged.
He said, “I’m all in for President Trump.” It wasn’t really framed as news or an official endorsement. But he nevertheless made it clear that his loyalties lie with Trump.
“I have done it. Yeah. I have. I have endorsed him wholeheartedly.”
He then explained that this shouldn’t really be any surprise to anyone, least of all Trump. Johnson was one of the “closest allies that President Trump had in Congress.” Johnson noted that they (the conservatives in Congress and the White House) were able to accomplish a lot during Trump’s first term, bringing in economic stability and policies that made for a stronger nation and world.
“We brought about the greatest economic numbers in the history of the world, not just the country because his policies worked.”
Johnson also served in Trump’s defense when he was brought up on impeachment charges, as well as voted not to certify the results of the 2020 election that kicked Trump out of office.
And as far as his record goes, few congress members have voted as conservatively and “Trump-like” during their tenure than Johnson.
So no, it shouldn’t be any surprise that the speaker supports another Trump term. In fact, he rather expects it.
As he told Kernan, “I expect he’ll be our nominee. Yeah. And he’s gonna win it and we have to make Biden a one-term president. We have to do that.”
Of course, it doesn’t hurt that current polling also suggests Trump to win the White House in 2024. Mike Johnson’s endorsement of him just reminds us of Trump’s strong conservative record.
