This story is the perfect example of liberal math in action. New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D) has announced a gigantic new vehicle tax on all commuters who drive into New York City for work. But because the tax hike isn’t quite as high as what was originally proposed, Hochul claims that she’s saving the taxpayers money!
Hochul was originally going to start charging commuters $15 a day to drive into New York City. This was a brand-new tax that would have totaled a jaw-dropping $3,750 a year. This turned out to be wildly unpopular.
Plus, Hochul had forgotten about the unspoken rule that politicians aren’t supposed to enact the prison shower scene in the taxpayers until after an election. She stepped in and “paused” the new congestion tax before it was supposed to be implemented.
Now that the election is over, Hochul says that she has charted a “new path forward.” You fiscal hawk, Kathy Hochul! You go, girl!
Instead of $15 a day, the new congestion tax will “only” be $9 a day. If you commute to work in New York City five days a week, for fifty weeks out of the year, it works out a still-jaw-dropping, brand-new tax of $2,250 a year.
When Hochul announced the change, she claimed that she was saving working families $1,500 a year. That is incredibly brazen. Working families will be forced to pay an extra $2,250 a year in new taxes and Hochul claims that she’s giving them a tax cut. Has math instruction gotten so bad in public schools that anyone falls for this?
This is truly liberal math in action. Watch:
.@GovKathyHochul: "We’re saving you 40%" by starting to charge $9 to enter Manhattan instead of $15 as we originally planned; "this lower toll will save daily commuters nearly $1,500 annually." pic.twitter.com/rOWLY963j8
